Personal Background:
Michael J. Hovis has been a dedicated member of the Bazetta community since 1972, when his family moved to the township. A proud graduate of Lakeview High School (Class of 1986), Michael’s roots run deep in the community. He played on the very first Lakeview Little Bulldogs team and has continued his support for local organizations, including the Lakeview Little Bulldogs.

Professional Background and Public Service:
Michael served in the Ohio Army National Guard from 1986 to 1992 as a Military Police Officer, including a deployment during the Persian Gulf War; he later earned degrees in Police Science Technology and Law Enforcement from Youngstown State University.

Michael’s career in public service spans decades. He served as a police officer in Bazetta Township and ultimately retired on December 31, 2018, after six years as Chief of Police. During his tenure, he successfully managed a $1.3 million budget, overseeing 14 employees, and implemented the township’s first State Collaboration Certification for the Bazetta Police Department.

In 2019, Michael founded Hovis Construction LLC., specializing in general contracting for federal government contracts involving construction and various services. His company has successfully completed nearly $10 million in projects for the U.S. government and military organizations, including the Fiscal Office/National Guard Bureau.

Michael was elected as Trustee in November 2021, taking office in January 2022. As Trustee, he is committed to ensuring a transparent and open government that represents all residents. He has already made a significant impact in managing community services, including launching programs such as:

Additionally, Michael has worked diligently to ensure the financial stability of the township, managing budgets and overseeing key infrastructure improvements. He has a particular focus on seeking grants for local paving projects, working with commissioners on water line installations, and negotiating labor contracts to reduce legal costs.

Family Life:
Michael has been married to his wife, Stephanie, for 34 years. They have two children, Sadie and Ryan, and are blessed with three grandchildren: Ren, Rowan, and Hudson. Michael’s commitment to family is at the heart of his values, and he is deeply invested in ensuring that Bazetta remains a place where families can prosper and thrive.
